Gadsden, Alabama Description
Gadsden is a city located in the northeastern corner of Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Etowah County and is situated on the Coosa River. The city has a population of 36,856 as of 2019 and is part of the Gadsden-Anniston-Oxford Combined Statistical Area.
Gadsden was founded in 1867 by European-American settlers who named it after James Gadsden, an American diplomat and soldier who served in the War of 1812. The city quickly grew to become an important industrial center due to its proximity to coal mines and iron ore deposits. During World War II, Gadsden was home to a major aircraft manufacturing plant that produced thousands of planes for the war effort.
Today, Gadsden is known for its vibrant downtown area which features numerous restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues. The city also boasts several parks and recreational areas including Noccalula Falls Park which features a 90-foot waterfall and hiking trails. Other attractions include the Hardin Center for Cultural Arts which houses art galleries, theaters, and educational programs; the Imagination Place Children’s Museum; and the Gadsden Museum of Art which showcases works from local artists.
Gadsden is also home to several colleges including Gadsden State Community College, Jacksonville State University (JSU), Wallace State Community College (WSCC), and Troy University (TU). The city has a strong economy with major employers such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, International Paper Company, and more.
