Decatur, AL is a city located in the northern part of the state of Alabama. It is situated along the Tennessee River and is part of the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. The city has a population of 55,683 as of 2019 and covers an area of 54.4 square miles.
Decatur is known for its rich history and culture, having been founded in 1820 by John Decatur, a veteran of the War of 1812. The city was an important center for cotton production during the 19th century and was also home to several major industries such as railroads, steel mills, and paper mills. Today, Decatur is home to many businesses including aerospace companies, automotive suppliers, and food processing plants.
The city has several attractions including Point Mallard Park which features a water park, camping sites, picnic areas, and trails; Cook's Natural Science Museum which houses over 200 species of animals; Delano Park which offers tennis courts, playgrounds, and walking trails; and Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge which provides habitat for migratory birds. There are also several historic sites such as Bank Street Historic District which features Victorian-style homes from the late 19th century; Old State Bank Building which was built in 1836; and Carnegie Visual Arts Center which houses art galleries and studios.
Decatur has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is around 64°F (18°C). The city receives around 50 inches (127 cm) of precipitation per year with most occurring during the summer months from April to September.
