Calera, Alabama Description

Calera, Alabama is a small city located in Shelby County, about 30 miles south of Birmingham. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area and has a population of around 10,000 people.

The city was founded in 1887 and was originally called "Calera Station" after the nearby railroad station. The name was changed to Calera in 1889 and it was incorporated as a town in 1895.

The city is known for its historic downtown area which features many buildings from the late 19th century. There are also several parks and recreational areas including the Calera City Park, which features a playground, picnic area, walking trails, and a lake.

The economy of Calera is largely based on agriculture with many farms located in the surrounding area. The city also has several manufacturing plants that produce automotive parts and other products.

Calera is home to several schools including Calera High School, Calera Middle School, and Calera Elementary School. The city also has several churches including First Baptist Church of Calera and St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Calera is served by two major highways: Interstate 65 and US Highway 31. The nearest airport is Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport which is about 30 miles away from the city center.
