Bessemer, Alabama Description
Bessemer is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is located in the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover-Cullman Combined Statistical Area. The population was 27,456 at the 2010 Census. It is within the Birmingham-Hoover, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Birmingham-Hoover-Talladega, AL Combined Statistical Area.
Bessemer is located on the edge of the Appalachian Mountains and has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The city has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1887 when it was established as a steel mill town by Henry F. DeBardeleben. The city was named after Sir Henry Bessemer, an English engineer who developed a process for mass producing steel.
Today, Bessemer is home to several large employers including UAB Medical West Hospital and Vulcan Materials Company. The city also boasts several attractions such as Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park and Alabama Splash Adventure Water Park. In addition to these attractions, Bessemer also offers plenty of shopping opportunities at its many retail stores and restaurants.
