Basement Carpet

Q: I’m planning to install carpet in my basement. We have finished it off with insulation, sheetrock, etc. The basement does not have a water problem, but it is humid.  What is the best type of carpet and padding to install?

A: I would start with a padding that has an anti-microbial built into it to keep it from supporting mold or mildew.

Consider a carpeting made from olefin face fiber. This product is very chemical resistant in case you need to clean it with an aggressive cleaning solution (including bleach). Make sure the entire carpet is constructed of synthetic products only, not a jute backed carpet. Jute backing is very similar to a potato sack, so you can guess how that would hold up to moisture.

Mold and mildew love moist, stagnant air, so you should try to create a dry, airy environment by installing an automatic dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air and ceiling fans to keep the air moving. It will also help keep the room more comfortable.

To locate the reputable professionals to install your carpeting, dehumidifier and ceiling fans, please visit our site at http://www.servicemagic.com, submit service requests for the appropriate specialists and let us match you with the ideal service professional in your area.

Good luck!
