Western Maryland Scenic Railroad
Posted October 21, 2008 by Ima Local
If you are looking for a fun place to take the kids, plan a day for the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland, Maryland. Adults and children of all ages will enjoy the scenic trip through the beautiful Allegheny Mountains. These exciting three-hour tours are offered on the “Mountain Thunder” from May to December. This is a restored 1916 Baldwin Steam Locomotive, and children can learn what it was like to travel by train in the early twentieth century. The train stops for an hour and a half in the town of Frostburg, and children will enjoy watching the locomotive turn on the turntable before it returns to Cumberland. Make reservations at the Western Maryland Railway Station because the tickets sell out fast, especially during the peak season in October. You can purchase either coach or first class seating, and the cost of first class includes lunch and is available on weekends beginning May 11th. It’s best to buy tickets at least five days ahead. The kids would also have a fantastic time on special train excursions called the Murder Mystery Trains offered during the evening. Learn some history along with the kids while you visit the many other attractions at the Canal Place Heritage Area. The C & O Canal Towpath, running alongside the Potomac River, offers a place for biking or hiking, and you can plan a nice picnic in the Canal National Historic Park.
