Topanga, CA - hippies love it!
Posted July 15, 2008 by Town Genius
Halfway between Santa Monica and Malibu, inland, lies the hippie, artsy unincorporated Mecca of Topanga Canyon. Surrounded by state parks and the Pacific Ocean, Topanga is a little gem of rustic life within driving distance of Los Angeles. In the 1920’s Topanga was a hangout for silent film stars and Hollywood types; by the 1960’s, it had become a wild and wooly playground for an eclectic mix of artists: such as Neil Young and Dennis Wilson (of the Beach Boys).
Today, Topanga still retains its artsy roots, with plays and concerts at the Theatricum Botanicum, and the well-attended Memorial weekend event called Topanga Days, a fair which is the biggest bohemian bash in California. In June, local artists host an Artists’ Studio Tour, sponsored by Topanga Canyon Gallery. Popular hangouts in the canyon include the mostly vegan romantic restaurant, Inn of the Seventh Ray, the family-oriented Rocco’s Pizza and a rustic breakfast spot called Pat’s Grill. Abuelita’s Mexican Restaurant, besides serving up a killer margarita, also is the heart of the local music scene, with bands performing nearly every night of the week.
Other Topanga activities include horseback riding or hiking in one of the three parks that make up the Santa Monica mountain range.
