The Nature Zone

Posted October 24, 2008 by Ima Local

I highly recommend The Nature Zone in Lynchburg, Virginia, on the bottom floor of the Kemper Street Train Station. Admission is free to the public and this establishment’s purpose is to teach about wildlife, environmental awareness, and conservation of resources.  Children of all ages can learn by close encounter and touching the animals under supervision. The nature center cares for such animals as turtles, opossums, flying squirrels, toads, rats, armadillos, and iguanas. Numerous species of snakes reside there, also; all are non-venomous, though they may still bite. The hands-on and interactive educational opportunities are designed just for kids to learn and have fun with the animals. Your kids can hold a gentle snake or view the large collection of animal skulls, bones, snake skins, and animal pelts. They even have an insect collection with beautiful butterflies. Staff members are readily available to answer questions. There are parent/child volunteer programs if your family wants to feed the animals, and the “Teen Critter Club” is designed for animal lovers age 13-17. The Zone is open year round, Mondays through Saturdays, but be sure to call for exact hours. Children fifteen and under must be accompanied by an adult.
