Sunnyside, great neighborhood in Queens, NY

Posted July 15, 2008 by user-submitted-content

Sunnyside, New York- the best of so many possible worlds.

Technically a part of New York City, the neighborhood manages to be vibrant enough to seem like you’re in the middle of a great metropolis, while being just far enough removed from Manhattan that the residential streets are relatively quiet, and you can pass a weekend unnoticed in the gardens or a local cafe. Sunnyside is conveniently located- 15 minutes away from Grand Central Station on the 7 train, and it is perhaps this location that contributes to the number of people who choose to make it home. And if not the location, there are the homes themselves- many based around planned communal gardens which add to the ‘real neighborhood’ feel.

In keeping with tradition, there are still great numbers of Irish immigrants settling in, and they bring their shops with them- the great ‘Butcher’s Block’, for example, which carries Irish & British products of all sorts, from hot prepared pasties to packages of imported tea.  There are plenty of pubs and restaurants to match, as well as the only ‘all-inclusive’ St. Patrick’s Day march in the city.  And it’s not just the Irish who choose to make their homes here - Sunnyside has in recent years become home to Turks, Pakistanis, and Koreans as well. It’s a true mix of ethnic groups, which many may find appealing.

Like most of New York, the weather in Sunnyside tends to be moderate. It generally feels a bit cooler than the city- a boon in summer, not so much in winter.  Visit in spring or fall for the best weather- warm enough to not have to worry about layers, but without the heat and humidity of summer.
