Skiing mecca - Stowe, VT

Posted July 15, 2008 by user-submitted-content

Stowe, Vermont. Arguably one of the best places to ski on the east coast.  What with the gorgeous season of powder last winter, Stowe is the place to go if you are looking for any type of winter fun.

The best food is to be found at the country style restaurants such as McCarthy’s, for a breakfast, Piecasso’s for pizza, and the Shed for a delicious dinner.  Stowe has recently expanded to having a more culturally diverse palate; and now boasts the Japanese Hana hibachi style restaurant, and the Thai Red Basil.

The biggest appeal of Stowe is probably Mount Mansfield.  In the winter it is an excellent place for all those thrill seekers looking for some great snow to shred.  In the spring and summer, the mountain is a wonderful hiking spot, and you can ride the gondola all the way up the mountain for a view of the beautiful scenery that is Stowe.  Other attractions include the annual ice sculpture contest.  The heavenly sculptures are incredibly good, and are on display around town all week during the contest.  One of the most highly anticipated events of the spring is the Vermont Teen Fest for the younger crowd, featuring two days of fun in one of the area’s largest indoor venues.  Of course one of the biggest attractions of the fall is the annual fall bash.  Those lucky enough to ellicit an invitation are to attend the biggest party of the year thrown by Jake Carpenter, founder and owner of Burton Snowboards.

Fun facts about Stowe include; most of the buildings in Stowe Village were constructed between 1810 and 1910, and neighboring Smugglers Notch likely got its name from the thriving contraband trade in potash that was embargoed by the British during the War of 1812.

Most kids in Stowe attend Stowe elementary school, and then Stowe middle and High school.  However some drive further out to attend Bishop Marshall school, and the avid ski racers attend the Mount Mansfield Winter Academy in the winter months, a private school that specializes in ski racing and snowboarding.

Stowe is a fairly rural town, with a nice feature being its lack of suburbs and housing complexes.  There are many popular places to live, such as the Nebraska Valley, Shaw hill road, Moscow, and Notchbrook road.  Others opt to live right in town, on main street, on thereabouts.
