New Orleans has it all!
Posted July 15, 2008 by Town Genius
New Orleans is has the perks of both small town life and big city life. Like a large city, there’s always something exciting to do. But at the same time, people are friendly and easygoing, which gives the city its small-town charm. Unlike many other major cities, New Orleans is home to many unique mom n’pop businesses rather than your boring chain stores.
Our nickname “The Big Easy” derives from our rich history and tradition of jazz. Some of the major festivals hosted here include the Jazz and Heritage Festival, Voodoo Fest, Essence Fest, and the French Quarter Fest and of course, Mardi Gras. When the city isn’t hosting a festival, there are plenty of clubs where you can enjoy the unique jazz musicians and brass bands of New Orleans.
If you’re the quiet type you should go to the museums. The Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art are excellent choices. The Ogden Museum features more contemporary art, while the latter is more suited for those who enjoy more traditional art. No one can leave the city without trying the local cuisine. No trip to New Orleans is complete without eating a beignet from Café du Monde. Both tourists and locals love this place.
Other local favorites include Angelo Brocato’s Lola’s, Voodoo Barbeque, Betsey’s Pancake House, Cochon, and Creole Creamery. I highly recommend you spend some time on Frenchman Street, which has more of a local flavor than Bourbon Street. There are many great neighborhoods in New Orleans as well. The Uptown area, Audubon Park, and Garden District Neighborhoods are generally the most coveted neighborhoods. For something more affordable but nice, you can choose Broadmoor, a middle class neighborhood that is making a strong comeback after the hurricane. The best schools for kids include Lusher, Audubon, Hynes, and Ben Franklin New Orleans attracts people of all ages and cultures, including wild college students looking to party, jazz music aficionados, older people who enjoy fine art, international tourists, history buffs and many more. There is something for everyone here.
