Henry Clay’s Home (Ashland)

Posted October 21, 2008 by Ima Local

Ashland, the home of Henry Clay, a Kentucky politician during the 19th century, sits on a large piece of land.  The site consists of a large mansion, a walled-in garden, and several out buildings, including ice houses.  Since I grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, I have known this site all my life.  As a kid, I enjoyed going through the mansion and seeing all the old furniture and learning about history.  The ice houses are the best out buildings because even in the summer, they are cool—they are dug deeply into the ground.  The story behind them is interesting to kids—that people stored ice there in the winter and covered the ice with straw so it would last into the summer.  Kids can enjoy running around and playing on the large grassy expanse of most of the estate or they can enjoy walking the paths in the garden as I did and as my niece and nephew have done.  Lexington has plenty of nice places to see but this is one of the best because it offers opportunities for learning but also opportunities for running around in the grass and enjoying the outdoors.  Although the address says it is on Sycamore St., you can get to it from Richmond Road, which is Main Street on the east side of town.
