Gateway Clipper Fleet

Posted March 24, 2008 by Realty.com Editor

This is an awesome place for a date, a family event, wedding, reunion, or just a nice day or dinner out. The Gateway Clipper could be a few different things: You could chose to a dinner, a dinner and dance, or just a nice boat ride with no meals. You will board the boat at a specified time (they will tell you when you make your reservation). Once aboard, you will be taken on a well versed tour of many tourist spots of Pittsburgh, going down parts of the “3 rivers” that make up the beautiful of the city.

There are several different boats to chose from. I reccommend the website, which explains the cruises offered. They range from about an hour to three hours, but they also offer all day trips to various other places (casinos, fall scenic tours, etc).

During the summer, they have an ice cream social. Many of the cruises also offer live entertainment. The Captain’s Dinner and Dance requires you to be dressed up, which was a lot of fun! If you’re looking for something different to do or a fun way to tour the very well known “3 rivers” of Pittsburgh, this is definatley for you. I was fortunate to go when a Steelers game was home, so we got an awesome view of Heinz Field at night with a sold out crowd! I have also been on the Gateway Clipper when the Pirates play, and once again, you get an awesome view of PNC Park.

There are many different types of people on the cruise: couples, families, etc. I have even witnessed 3 weddings on other boats of the Gateway Clipper while out on the cruise. You can rent out the Gatway Clipper for private events (I don’t know how much that costs). I reccommend this for kids, adults, families, couples....basically anyone looking for a fun time out. Prices are very reasonable. However, I was a little dissapointed with the Captain’s Dinner Cruise menu (around $50 per person). I think that the Chicken and Ribs Dinner would be a much better value (for around $25 per person) for those on a budget.

Any time would be a good time to go. I prefer just before sunset in the summer time. Fall is also a nice time to go. They offer special fall site seeing tours for the whole day. Inside the boat (where you eat) is air-conditioned. There is a lower deck and upper deck, with plenty of chairs lined up so you could sit outside. I suppose each boat would be a little different, though. It is a very comfortable place and I think that even the elderly would enjoy it and and be comfortable in the seats. Hope this helps!
